Trying to port to Android...

For some time now, I've been hoping to create a phone-usable version of Retro Messenger. It makes sense since messaging applications are most at home when on mobile devices, and this would make use far easier. There has been a few 'road bumps' so far. I've always found mobile a tricky platform to develop for. Right now I'm working with Kotlin for the Android version of RM, and despite things being fairly straightforward I still find myself tripping over silly mistakes. It's just not a platform or OS I'm used to, and there's plenty of annoying caveats when it comes to rebuilding something, but I'm optimistic that users will get to try out the beta version of RM on their mobile devices by the end of the month 📱

I'll admit, a downside to local software vs web development is that users need to download it every time 🤣
If I want to make even one small change I need to update the six different places people can download it from, though that's the trade off I suppose

What's happening

Just released 10.2.0, they grow up so fast 🥲

Just when you think everything is set nice and tight, something inevitability comes up. A feature you realized you should have added, a bug that you just discovered, or just something that doesn't sit right. I'll admit, I'm a little surprised by the journey. When RM was first conceived I imagined it as a peer-to-peer messenger, literally two devices connecting to each other's ports. That worked, but I thought it would be easier to use a relay. From there I continued adding features before I realized how limiting it was to lock users into one another (despite the security upsides). Now RM is totally capable of chatting with multiple partners. Part of me misses how it used to look, all technical and simple, but I realize users want more out of their software and I want to give them a good reason to choose RM over others. Despite it's niche nature, I still believe having frictionless sign-up and memory-only messages will still appeal to the right people.

Marketing is hard, I've never been a design or social media guy 🤣 It feels like it either costs a fortune, gets no views, or is unwelcome (like self-promoting in a forum). Still, success is never overnight, it can take months (or even a year) to get a few dozen users, and even longer to get consistent ones who share things around. If you're in it just to get cash you'll splutter out pretty quickly. The passion for your craft is what pushes you forward, not your engagement. Can't wait to send the next update along 🎆
